Hunza Valley Motorcycle Route
The most photogenic stretch of the KKH (Rakaposhi, Attabad Lake and the Passu Cones) and how to ride it without losing your map to a dead zone.
Hunza is the postcard on the Karakoram Highway. Based out of Karimabad, you can spend two or three days on short, spectacular rides: the turquoise Attabad Lake and its tunnels, the sawtooth Passu Cones, the Hussaini suspension bridge, and the dawn viewpoint at Eagle's Nest above Duikar looking straight at Rakaposhi and Lady Finger.
The riding is easy by KKH standards, mostly good paved surface and short stages, which makes it the ideal place to slow the bike down. The catch is the same as the rest of Gilgit-Baltistan: your phone's live map will drop in and out, so the navigation has to be sitting on the device already.

What to ride from Karimabad
- Karimabad → Attabad Lake → Passu (~50 km): the signature run past the lake, through the KKH tunnels, to the Passu Cones and the Hussaini bridge.
- Duikar / Eagle's Nest (~7 km up): a short, steep climb to the best sunrise and sunset viewpoint in the valley.
- Baltit and Altit forts: a slow morning in Karimabad itself, both walkable or a short bike hop from the bazaar.
- Onward to Sost and Khunjerab: Hunza is the natural staging point before the border pass.
Best time to ride Hunza
Two windows stand out. Early-to-mid April brings the cherry and apricot blossom: brief, and dependent on the year's weather. Late September into October brings the autumn colour Hunza is famous for, with stable skies and thinner crowds.
Midsummer is warm and green but busier with domestic tourism, and the lower KKH approach can be affected by monsoon landslides. Winter riding is for well-prepared bikers only: cold, short days and possible snow.
Fuel, food and beds
Aliabad/Karimabad has fuel, bike mechanics, food and the widest range of guesthouses on this part of the KKH, from budget rooms to view-hotels perched above the valley. Fill up here before heading toward Sost, and again at Sost before the pass.
Offline navigation in Hunza
Hunza's side roads (up to Duikar, out to the glaciers, into the villages) are exactly where a live map fails you, because coverage is thin off the main highway. Cache the valley before you arrive: tiles, your points of interest and the short bike routes you plan to ride.
Apex Rider keeps all of that on the phone, so you can navigate the Eagle's Nest climb or find your guesthouse after dark without a bar of signal.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hunza Valley good for motorcycle touring?
Yes, it is one of the easiest and most rewarding parts of the Karakoram Highway to ride, with good paved roads, short stages and world-class scenery. Karimabad makes an ideal base for two or three days of short bike rides.
When is the best time to visit Hunza on a motorcycle?
Early April for the blossom and late September to October for autumn colour are the standout windows, both with stable weather. Midsummer is green but busier and can see monsoon landslides on the lower KKH approach.
Will my phone have signal in Hunza?
Coverage is patchy and mostly on SCOM, and it drops off quickly on the side roads to Duikar, Attabad and the villages. Download the valley for offline use before you arrive so navigation keeps working. Apex Rider stores the maps and routes on your device.
Ride it with Apex Rider
Every route on this page runs through the same dead zones: patchy carrier coverage, long fuel gaps and fast-changing mountain weather. Apex Rider is the offline-first motorcycle navigation app built for exactly this kind of bike trip. Download your whole tour before you lose signal and keep turn-by-turn navigation, your route, points of interest and the last weather forecast on the phone with the radio off. Add crash-detection SOS, live crew tracking and a maintenance garage for the long haul.
Crash detection, SOS and live tracking need a signal to reach your contacts or emergency services. Across much of northern Pakistan there is none. Treat them as a backup and carry a satellite messenger for remote legs.
